Canadian Energy + Heat Pumps

Gas appliances tie you to American energy—most of Ontario's gas is fracked in the Eastern USA. Electric appliances like heat pumps use made-in-Ontario energy. Come learn why electrifying your home makes sense now and in the future.

About the event

This trade war has massively changed what Canadians buy and how they travel. You've probably switched things in your grocery cart and kept trips north of the border.

But if you heat your home with a gas furnace or boiler, you’re subscribed to an American product—most of Ontario’s gas is imported from the US.

Switching your old gas appliances for electric ones keeps more of your energy dollars in your community. This webinar looks at that opportunity from two angles.

The big picture, with Steven Pacifico of the Building Decarbonization Alliance. Steven will share why electrification is taking over economies around the world, where Canada is headed, and why electrifying your home makes sense now and in the future. He'll cover the financial case and the best time to make the switch

Your home, with Nathan Postma of Toronto Home Energy Network. Nathan will follow Ontario's gas from American shale fields to Toronto basements. Then he'll walk through the swap that makes the biggest difference: a cold-climate heat pump that runs on made-in-Ontario electricity (and cools your home in summer too!).

No one's asking you to rip out a furnace or boiler that works. But if yours is over 10 years old, it's time to start planning its replacement. You'll leave knowing your options, so you're ready when your system retires.

Registration is free. Everyone who signs up gets the recording and a handout with useful links the day after.

Steven Pacifico is Associate Executive Director of the Building Decarbonization Alliance, whose work includes Canada's Home Electrification Toolkit, a plain-language guide to electric options for homeowners. He previously led the Zero Carbon Buildings Accelerator Program at Toronto 2030 District, helping kick-start electrification in downtown Toronto's commercial buildings. With more than 25 years in energy and climate work across business, government and non-profits, Steven brings the big picture on where Canada's buildings, and our homes, are headed.

Toronto Home Energy Network helps single-family homeowners in Toronto navigate the switch to heat pumps with expert guides and community support. Our most popular guide is the free Your First Heat Pump Guidebook, which calls out installation speed bumps, incentives, and gives you real prices from projects in Toronto. Heat Pump Parties, run by our amazing Partner Communities, are a great way to get community support on your project.
