Call For A Meter Reader

There’s one more (really important!) billing change you should make. Enbridge bills based on the gas they think you used. Unlike your Toronto Hydro bill, your Enbridge bill is usually just an estimate.

Occasionally, a human meter reader from Enbridge will come by to double-check their estimate against your actual gas use. If it’s above what they thought, they bump up your bill. If below, you get a credit.

This matters for you because your heat pump is going to dramatically reduce your gas use (even if you keep a gas furnace as a backup). If a human meter reader doesn’t happen to come by during your first winter with a heat pump, you’ll pay for gas you aren't actually using!

Overpaying stings, but it’s just temporary. The meter reader will credit your Enbridge account for every m3 of gas you didn’t burn.

You can also submit your own meter readings to Enbridge. The catch with manual submission is that the process can drag on —you’ll probably need to submit multiple readings over a few months. An Enbridge meter reader should be able to adjust their billing estimates in one go.
