Keep It Clear

Your heat pump moves a lot of air! Make sure nothing is choking off your heat pump’s air supply (like piled up snow or items stored against the outdoor unit).

If ice ever forms on the back or sides of the heat pump, let the heat pump’s defrost cycle take care of it. Do not chip away the ice—the coils on the back or sides are easy to damage (and expensive to replace).

Your heat pump’s defrost cycle also drips water off the unit. If this water then drips on a concrete pathway, it’ll refreeze and create a bit of an ice rink! This isn’t ideal if you use that path in the winter.

One low-tech fix is propping up a wooden board under the heat pump that directs the water away from the pathways. Having a contractor move the outdoor unit is also a possibility, but that job will cost a couple grand.
